Overview
The Daily Fold ("the App") is a personalized news reader that delivers a curated daily edition from publicly available RSS feeds. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used, and your choices regarding that information.
Information We Collect
Information Stored Locally on Your Device
The App stores all user data locally on your device. We do not operate user accounts, and we do not transmit your personal data to any server we control. Locally stored data includes:
- Reading preferences: Your selected news sections, feed choices, reading time budget, and theme preference.
- Reading state: Which articles you have read, your reading streak, and edition completion status.
- Clippings: Articles you save for later reading.
- Puzzle progress: Your daily puzzle game state.
- Weather location: If you choose to enable the weather feature, your zip code or geographic coordinates are stored locally to fetch weather data. This location information is never transmitted to us.
- Notification preferences: Your preferred notification time, if enabled.
- Subscription status: Whether you have an active premium subscription.
Information Collected by Third-Party Services
The App uses the following third-party services:
- RSS Feed Providers: The App fetches publicly available RSS and Atom feeds from news publishers (such as The Guardian, Fox News, Ars Technica, and others). These requests are made directly from your device to the feed provider's servers. The feed providers may log your device's IP address in accordance with their own privacy policies. We do not control and are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party publishers.
- Open-Meteo Weather API: If you enable the weather feature, the App sends your zip code or geographic coordinates to the Open-Meteo API (open-meteo.com) to retrieve weather data. Open-Meteo is a free, open-source weather API. No API key or account is required. Please refer to Open-Meteo's privacy policy for details on how they handle requests.
- Apple App Store / Google Play Store: If you purchase a premium subscription, the transaction is handled entirely by Apple or Google. We do not receive or store your payment information, credit card details, or Apple ID / Google account information. Subscription management (including cancellation and renewal) is handled through your device's app store settings.
Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your name, email address, or any personal identifiers.
- We do not create user accounts.
- We do not use analytics, tracking, or advertising SDKs.
- We do not collect device identifiers (IDFA, IDFV) for tracking purposes.
- We do not sell, share, or transmit any user data to third parties.
- We do not use cookies or web tracking technologies.
How We Use Information
All data stored by the App is used solely to provide and improve your reading experience:
- To generate your personalized daily edition based on your section and feed preferences.
- To track your reading progress and maintain your reading streak.
- To display local weather information if you have provided a location.
- To save your clippings and puzzle progress.
- To schedule daily notifications at your preferred time.
Data Retention
All user data is stored locally on your device and persists until you:
- Delete the App from your device.
- Clear the App's data through your device settings.
- Reset your preferences within the App's settings.
We do not retain any data on external servers.
Children's Privacy
The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. The App does not require account creation and does not collect personal identifiers.
Location Data
The weather feature is entirely optional. If you choose to use it:
- You may enter a zip code manually, or
- You may grant the App permission to access your device's location services.
Location permission is only requested when you explicitly tap the "Use My Location" button. The App does not access your location in the background. Your location data is stored locally on your device and is only used to fetch weather information from Open-Meteo.
You can remove your weather location at any time in the App's settings.
Push Notifications
The App may send you a single daily local notification ("Your morning Fold is ready") if you enable this feature in settings. This notification is generated entirely on your device using the system's local notification scheduler. No notification data is sent to external servers.
Subscriptions
Premium subscriptions are processed and managed entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We do not receive or have access to your payment information. For subscription management, cancellation, and billing inquiries, please use your device's app store settings.
Subscription terms:
- Subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period.
- You can manage or cancel your subscription in your device's Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions (iOS) or Google Play Store > Subscriptions (Android).
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by updating the "Effective Date" at the top of this document. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
